Pronunciation
- How do you say it?
- Alif is not a consonant of its own. Inside or at the end of a word it makes the vowel before it long (baa). At the start of a word it carries a hamza and is read as a, i or u.
- Sounds like
- The long 'a' in 'father'. The hamza is the short catch in the middle of 'uh-oh'.
- Tip for parents
- Alif never joins the letter after it. It is one straight stroke from top to bottom, which makes it a good first letter.
