Short surahs for kids
Short surahs are the small chapters at the end of the Quran. Most of them are in the thirtieth part, Juz 'Amma. Al-Fatiha, the first surah of the Quran, belongs with them too.
Children start with these surahs because they are short, have a beautiful rhythm and are easy to repeat — and because Muslims recite them in prayer every day.
Each surah here has 3 to 7 verses. With one verse a day and daily review, many children learn a short surah in one or two weeks. Pick a surah to read its text, listen to the recitation and find out in simple words what it is about.

Frequently asked questions
Which surah should my child learn first?
Many children start with Al-Fatiha, because it is recited in every prayer. Then come the short surahs at the end of the Quran, such as Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas.
How long does it take to memorise a short surah?
It differs per child. With one verse a day and daily review, a surah of 3 to 7 verses usually takes one or two weeks. A few minutes every day works better than one long session a week.
My child cannot read Arabic yet. Can they still learn surahs?
Yes. Many children learn surahs by listening and repeating before they can read. Learning the Arabic letters later lets them read from the mushaf on their own.
I don't read Arabic myself. How can I help my child?
Play the recitation and listen together. Ask your child to recite the verse to you. Pick a short, fixed time each day and praise the effort, not only the result.
Is the explanation on these pages a translation?
No. It is a short explanation in simple words for children — not a verse-by-verse translation and not a full tafsir. To go deeper, ask a teacher or read a recognised translation.
